Served in the Indian Mutiny, being present at the battle of Cawnpore and the siege and capture of Lucknow.
Served in Oude and Central India with the Camel Corps.
Was later Inspector of Prisons in Ireland.
He married, February 16th 1871, Helen Emily, third daughter of the Rev. Richard Trench D.D., later Archbishop of Dublin – by whom he had issue three sons and four daughters.

Married, April 26th 1859, Captain the Hon. Somerset Richard Hamilton Ward, 8th Regiment of Foot; 5th son of the 3rd Viscount Bangor. He was born March 9th 1833 and died December 26th 1912.
She died April 24th 1920.
