Baptized at Chawton by the Rev. Charles Bridges Knight, March 11th 1838.
Ensign in the Indian Army, February 22nd 1855.
Ensign, 72nd Bengal Native Infantry, October 19th, 1855.
Lieutenant, July 1st 1857.
Was lieutenant in the 72nd Bengal Native Infantry at Neemuch when the Mutiny broke out in May 1857 – he was attached to the 23rd Bengal Fusiliers in January 1858, and served with the Regiment until the end of the campaign, including the siege and capture of Lucknow.
Indian Mutiny medal with bar.
He went on Furlough in 1859.
Joined, as Ensign, 84th Regiment of Foot, January 24th 1860.
Lieutenant, November 11th 1863.
Exchanged to the 81st Regiment of Foot, December 23rd 1864.
Exchanged to the 2nd Dragoon Guards, May 29th 1866.
Captain, May 28th 1870.
Retired, March 22nd 1871.
Married, in 1863, Louisa Octavia Charlotte, daughter of Courtney Stacey of Sandling Place, Maidstone.
William Brodnax Knight died at Winchester, November 4th 1896, and was buried at Chawton, (Epitaph page 224) having had issue:
